Some evenings call for a bit more choice, and that's when Ayr earns its keep. Fifteen minutes south, it's the bigger town, with a proper spread of restaurants and bars rather than Troon's smaller, quieter scene. It's an easy taxi ride, and worth treating as your "dress up a bit more" option when Troon starts to feel too relaxed for the mood you're in.

Coffee and a slow morning

Some mornings don't need a plan, just a good coffee and somewhere to watch the world go by. Troon and Prestwick both do independent café culture well, proper flat whites, home baking, the kind of place that isn't in a hurry to move you along. It's the right way to start a day of golf, or to recover from one along Troon Beach.

Classic pub food

There's a version of Scottish pub food that gets it exactly right, fish and chips, steak pie, a Sunday roast that actually tastes like someone's gran made it, and Ayrshire does that version well. The pubs around Troon and Prestwick lean hearty and unpretentious rather than trying too hard, which is exactly what you want after a long day outdoors.

What's actually local

Ayrshire's farming heritage runs deep, and it shows up on menus everywhere: Ayrshire potatoes, the distinctive rolled cut of Ayrshire bacon, good local beef and lamb, proper dairy. Add in the seafood off the coast and the whisky tradition running through this whole part of the west, and you start to understand why people who visit for the golf end up talking about the food just as much.

A festival worth timing a trip around

If beer's more your thing than whisky, the Ayrshire Real Ale Festival takes over Troon itself in early October, real ales and craft beer and cider from across Scotland, alongside food stalls and live music drifting down the high street. It tends to fall right at the tail end of golf season, which makes it an easy thing to build a trip around.
