Kidz Play, Prestwick: The Best Rainy-Day Option Near Troon

Ayrshire weather rarely asks permission before it changes its mind, and when it does, having somewhere reliable and indoors already in mind saves the whole day. Kidz Play, right on the Prestwick beachfront, is the one local families reach for without a second thought.

What it is

This is a family owned and run, seaside-themed indoor play centre on the Esplanade in Prestwick, a short drive from Troon. Inside, kids work through snake slides, tube slides, activity towers, and a ball pool, with a dedicated soft play area kept separate for toddlers, so the smallest visitors aren't competing for space with the bigger kids. It's built for roughly ages one to twelve, wheelchair accessible, though not really set up for pushchairs once you're inside the play area itself.

Food and facilities

The on-site Rest Ashore Café, Terrace, and Takeaway covers hot and cold food, snacks, and ice cream, with options for common allergies and dietary needs. There's comfortable seating throughout for parents watching from the sidelines, along with toilets, baby changing, a breastfeeding area, and facilities for warming baby food and bottles. Outside food and drink aren't allowed inside, given the café already has that covered.

Opening times and how it works

Open seven days a week, generally 9:30am to 6pm, with last admission a couple of hours before close. It's walk-in only, first come first served, no bookings, though busier periods run two-hour play sessions to keep things fair; when it's quiet, you're welcome to stay as long as you like.

Birthday parties are a big part of what happens here, dedicated party rooms, a buffet, a supervised play or laser quest session. Worth calling ahead or checking the centre's site for current pricing and party details, since these get updated periodically.

Why it's worth knowing about

Kidz Play was never meant to be a full day out on its own, but it's exactly the kind of dependable fallback that makes an Ayrshire trip with kids far less weather-dependent. Pair a morning on Prestwick or Troon Beach with an afternoon here, or just keep it filed away for the one wet day that always seems to turn up somewhere in a Scottish holiday.

Kidz Play is a short drive from Blackrock House, a natural rainy-day partner to a beach morning in Troon. Get in touch for family day-out suggestions, or book your stay here.

Every so often a golf broadcast pans across the closing holes at Royal Troon and lingers, just for a second, on a house sitting right in the middle of the action. Golf Digest once sent a writer to find out why, and the answer turned out to be better than anyone watching from their sofa could have guessed.

The first sight of Culzean Castle tends to stop conversation in the car. It sits right on the edge of a cliff above the Firth of Clyde, twenty minutes south of Troon, looking exactly like the kind of place a story should be set. It usually is, in some sense; it's just that the story here happens to be true.
