Dundonald Links: Modern Championship Golf Near Troon

Not every great course on this coast dates back to the 1800s. Somewhere among all the history nearby, Dundonald Links quietly built itself into a course that belongs in the same conversation as its far older neighbours.

The course

Kyle Phillips, the architect behind Kingsbarns and The Grove, designed Dundonald as a links sister course for members of Loch Lomond Golf Club who wanted somewhere playable through the winter. Unlike Loch Lomond, though, this one was built to actually be reached, and it's now a high-end pay-and-play course open every day of the week.

Unusually for an Ayrshire links, Dundonald sits slightly inland with trees lining a number of fairways, a different feel to the pure dunesland courses around it, though it still plays over genuinely classic linksy ground. The par 3s stand out, a well-loved 6th and 11th among them, and the back nine, generally considered the stronger half, closes out the round with real teeth. The course has hosted multiple Scottish Women's Opens and the 2017 Scottish Open, and continues as an Open Qualifying course through the mid-2020s.

The clubhouse and stay

New ownership since 2019 has poured real investment into the place, a genuinely excellent clubhouse, an on-site restaurant, a gym, lodge-style accommodation for golfers who want to base an entire trip here rather than just play a round and move on. It's become a proper option for a longer stay, sitting directly across the railway line from Western Gailes, which means two very different but equally serious courses are a short walk apart.

Green fees and booking

Rates shift with the season, generally from around £95 in the quieter months up toward £195 at the height of summer, so it's worth checking current pricing directly with the club. Tee times book online, and twilight or full-day rates can offer better value depending on when you're playing.

Why it's worth including

Dundonald doesn't carry the centuries of history that Royal Troon or Prestwick do, but it stands entirely on its own merits, and its modern facilities make it an easier base for a longer trip than some of its more traditional neighbours. This is a genuinely strong addition to an Ayrshire golf itinerary, not a lesser alternative to the historic courses nearby.

Dundonald Links is a short drive from Blackrock House, and slots neatly into a wider Ayrshire golf trip alongside Royal Troon, Prestwick, and Western Gailes. Get in touch for help planning your itinerary, or book your stay here.

Every so often a golf broadcast pans across the closing holes at Royal Troon and lingers, just for a second, on a house sitting right in the middle of the action. Golf Digest once sent a writer to find out why, and the answer turned out to be better than anyone watching from their sofa could have guessed.

The first sight of Culzean Castle tends to stop conversation in the car. It sits right on the edge of a cliff above the Firth of Clyde, twenty minutes south of Troon, looking exactly like the kind of place a story should be set. It usually is, in some sense; it's just that the story here happens to be true.

Every golfer knows the Open Championship. Fewer know it started on a scrappy 12-hole course a few minutes from Troon, laid out by a man whose name is now etched into the sport's earliest history.
