Largs & the Cumbrae Ferry: A Classic Ayrshire Day Out

Some day trips need spreadsheets and timetables. This one needs a coat and about twenty minutes' notice. Largs and Great Cumbrae make for one of the simplest, most reliably good half-days out from Troon, and it works for pretty much anyone you bring along.

Largs itself

Largs is a proper, old-fashioned Scottish seaside town, about forty minutes north of Troon, a promenade, traditional cafés, views out across the Firth of Clyde toward Cumbrae and Bute. It has the unhurried feel of a place that's been doing this a long time and sees no reason to change now, easy to wander for an hour before or after the ferry, easy to find somewhere for ice cream along the front.

The ferry crossing

From Largs, CalMac runs a short hop over to Great Cumbrae, just a couple of minutes, one of the shortest scheduled crossings anywhere in Scotland. Sailings run frequently through the day, and foot passengers generally don't need to book ahead, though it's worth checking current times and vehicle requirements if you're bringing a car.

What to do on Cumbrae

Cumbrae is small enough to cycle round in an hour or two, and that's exactly what most people do once they arrive. Bike hire is available in Millport, the island's main town, if you haven't brought your own, and the flat coastal road makes for an easy, scenic ride that suits most ages and fitness levels. Millport itself is worth a stop too, a laid-back seafront scattered with cafés and shops, and the Cathedral of the Isles, one of the smallest cathedrals in Europe, makes for a quirky little detour if that sort of thing appeals.

Why it works so well as a day trip

The whole appeal here is how little effort it takes. No advance ferry bookings for foot passengers, no long crossing to build a full day around, no real risk of the whole plan collapsing if the timing shifts slightly. It suits families with younger kids just as easily as it suits a couple after a slower, scenic afternoon, and the cycle round Cumbrae on a clear day is one of the genuinely lovely things you can do on this coast without any planning at all.

Timing your visit

Because the crossing is so short and so frequent, this is one of the more flexible days on offer, no need to build the whole trip around a single sailing. A relaxed shape for the day: a late morning in Largs, an early afternoon crossing to Cumbrae for a cycle and lunch in Millport, and a return sailing timed to get you back for dinner in Troon.

Largs is around forty minutes from Blackrock House, close enough to make it an easy, low-stress day out whether or not kids are along for the ride. Get in touch for help planning your visit, or book your stay here.

Every so often a golf broadcast pans across the closing holes at Royal Troon and lingers, just for a second, on a house sitting right in the middle of the action. Golf Digest once sent a writer to find out why, and the answer turned out to be better than anyone watching from their sofa could have guessed.

The first sight of Culzean Castle tends to stop conversation in the car. It sits right on the edge of a cliff above the Firth of Clyde, twenty minutes south of Troon, looking exactly like the kind of place a story should be set. It usually is, in some sense; it's just that the story here happens to be true.

Every golfer knows the Open Championship. Fewer know it started on a scrappy 12-hole course a few minutes from Troon, laid out by a man whose name is now etched into the sport's earliest history.
